Trans Tasman's Political Pulse - 22 May 2017

Who’s Won The Battle Of The Deputies - Bennett or Ardern?
INSIGHTS ABOUT THE NEWS - National and Labour both have women in the Deputy Leader role, following the Greens and the Maori Party, but which dynamic deputy of the major parties has made the biggest impression?

In last year’s Trans Tasman Roll Call, Bennett rated 7 out of 10 - “plenty of ways to tackle homelessness, one of the issues Labour thinks will sink the Govt at the election. To make sure it doesn’t she’s going to have to deliver. Bennett isn’t afraid to try something new and she’s a risk taker. Needs to build on her Westie charm.”

Arden scored 4 out of 10 in the same publication. “Pleasant MP who smiles a lot - needs to do more because she’s had an unremarkable year despite holding the justice portfolio.” Ardern rates highly in Auckland, and among business people, but there’s still a question hanging over her ability.

The pair have clashed head to head on TV3’s AM programme debating a number of issues, with both giving no quarter. Since stepping up to be deputy, Ardern has performed well in the House. But is being deputy a kiss of death on the climb up the political ladder? Not too many deputies have stepped up to their party’s leadership, and when they have, they haven’t lasted long.

So which of our dynamic deputies has impressed you the most? Let us know by emailing editor@transtasman.co.nz telling who you think is doing best out of the pair, and give us your reasons. Your responses may be published, but your name will not be attached. We appreciate your input.
