The future of New Zealand’s mobility

Transport and Industrial Relations Committee makes recommendations to the Government about the future of New Zealand’s mobility

The Transport and Industrial Committee has presented its report to the House on its inquiry into the future of New Zealand’s mobility. The inquiry sought to investigate how changing transport technology and social and economic trends could enhance productivity and infrastructure, improve accessibility and safety, and reduce transport costs and the environmental footprint. A copy of the report is availablehere.

Our report makes 14 recommendations to the Government aimed at:
• encouraging disruptive and emerging transport technologies
• attracting overseas transport technology companies to New Zealand
• positioning New Zealand as a place where new transport technologies are developed, designed, and delivered
• increasing the uptake of electric vehicles
• promoting active transport, such as cycling
• improving accessibility, including a review of the Total Mobility scheme
• ensuring that innovation is considered in future transport modelling.

Jonathan Young, Chair of the Transport and Industrial Relations Committee, said “Technology is offering huge advances in transport mobility for New Zealanders, which the committee was very pleased to see in all of the areas listed in our terms of reference, such as productivity, accessibility, safety, and the environment.”
