Young people invited to summer camp about "ideas and politics" in January 2018

Hundreds of young people are expected to gather for a three-day political summer camp in Ōtaki this January.

Known as the Ōtaki Summer Camp, the event will bring together people aged between 17 and 30 years old for three days of ideas, politics, discussion, music, comedy, and nature.

Speakers include human rights lawyer Deborah Manning, political writer Morgan Godfery, and author Nicky Hager, with more to be announced in the coming months.

It is a chance for participants to hear and discuss interesting ideas, to meet and get to know other people who care about the issues facing New Zealand, and to visit local mountains, forests and rivers with experienced guides. In the evenings, the camp will also feature musical and comedy acts.

“Many young people care deeply about the issues facing New Zealand but are cynical about politics generally. We want the camp to bring people together - it’s about creating a sense of community with other young people who care,” says spokesperson Kimberley Collins."

The camp was inspired by other political summer camps for youth held throughout New Zealand’s history. From 1949, an annual “congress” was held at Curious Cove in the Marlborough Sounds, while two other influential youth conferences were held in Ōtaki in the 70s. Many of those present have since gone on to play important parts in the life and politics of New Zealand.

The organisers hope this will become an annual event.
