Christchurch welcomes Budget 2018 announcement

17 May 2018

The Government’s announcement of a $300 million capital acceleration facility delivers critical and much-needed certainty for Christchurch, says the head of the city’s economic development and city profile agency.

ChristchurchNZ chief executive Joanna Norris welcomed the Budget announcement, saying the additional funding would help continue our city’s positive rebuild momentum.

The fund is important because it can provide confidence that there is continued momentum with respect to core anchor projects,”

"This announcement should deliver confidence to the private sector that ongoing investment in Canterbury is supported by public sector investment," Ms Norris says.

“ChristchurchNZ has long argued the value of the anchor project portfolio is greater than the sum of its parts and the completion of the whole portfolio is essential to the city’s recovery.”

Today the Labour-led Government announced a $300 million capital acceleration fund for Christchurch to spend on key rebuild projects, such as our stadium, red zone and other key horizontal infrastructure projects.

Ms Norris says keeping our key rebuild projects on track supports our thriving and diverse economy.

“This supports our ongoing work in helping people understand the opportunity Christchurch presents as a city with modern, fit-for-purpose infrastructure and a high standard of living,” she says.

“ChristchurchNZ continues to work closely with the Christchurch City Council and private sector partners to ensure policy and investment supports a vibrant and liveable city with a strong economy.”
