Fast Track Ammendment Protest At Parliament Today
“A Direct Attack on Democracy and the Environment”: Activists Mobilise Against Fast Track Amendment Bill
Climate Liberation Aotearoa is calling forurgent public resistance to the Government’s proposed Fast Track Approvals Amendment Bill. The proposed Bill is a reckless escalation of an already harmful law — one that sacrifices Aotearoa’s environment, democracy, and community voices for corporate gain.
The original Fast Track Act has already cleared the way for massive coal mines, destructive developments on sacred whenua, and the revival of environmentally unsafe proposals. The Amendment Bill goes even further, forcing decisions through in just 60 days — slashing scrutiny and locking out affected communities and hapū from the consultation process.
“This Bill gives Ministers sweeping power while locking out communities and hapū,” said Climate Liberation Aotearoa spokesperson Rach Andrews. “It’s a fundamental threat to Aotearoa’s environment and to democratic participation.”
Despite overwhelming public opposition — with 83% of submissions against the original Act — the Government has used a parliamentary loophole to shrink the submissions window for the Amendment Bill from six weeks to just 11 days. The Coalition aims to pass the legislation before the end of the year.
Climate Liberation Aotearoa is calling on people across the motu to stand up, resist, and show that this giveaway of public power will not go unchallenged. The group will rally at Parliament during the Bill’s second reading on Tuesday, 9thth December, starting at 1pm.
Come along — let’s show this government that enough is enough!
