Symantec Security Response discovered a new malicious threat today - W32.Novarg.A@mm. W32.Novarg.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that is being upgraded from a Level 3 threat to a Level 4 threat. This worm appears to be spreading at a rapid rate. This threat is also known as Novarg, Shimgapi, W32/Mydoom@MM, Win32/Shimg.
Currently, Symantec Security Response has received 256 submissions. W32.Novarg.A@mm is an encrypted mass-mailing worm that arrives as an attachment with either a .exe, .scr, .zip, or .pif extension. This worm creates a mass-mailing of itself, which may clog mail servers or degrade network performance. Additional information will be made available as the threat is being analyzed.
The Worm Blocking technology found in the latest Symantec consumer products automatically detects this threat as it attempts to spread.
