Press Release: The New Zealand International Science Festival

The New Zealand International Science Festival 2004 is bringing mind-bending science and a glimpse of the future of technology to the people from 3-11 July 2004 in Dunedin.

Along with "Cyborg Man" Professor Kevin Warwick and marine expert Dr Sylvia Earle, the Science Festival offers an action packed week of activity with something for everyone with its twin themes of innovation and sustainability.

Discover practical tips to create a more environmentally friendly home in 'Sustainability brought home', a series of free, short workshops held at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on Saturday 3 July and Sunday 4 July.

Cabaret Pasteur is an award winning science show about Louis Pasteur, combining humour, drama, baguettes and wine. Presented by Professor Daniel Raichvarg of Burgundy University (France) Cabaret Pasteur has performances on Sunday 4 July, Tuesday 6 July and Wednesday 7 July.

'Life's what you make it' is an entertaining show for young people direct from the Edinburgh Science Festival. Two hapless scientists trapped in a mannequin factory have to discover the origins of red hair with some help from the audience, who also get to find out about genetics in the process.

On July 8 and July 9, the University of Otago presents Pathways to the Future, two days of free interactive science events.

Sports fans can visit the Human Performance Centre at the Department of Physical Education, and see how technology such as the aquatic flume is enhancing sports performance.

As climate change becomes a hot topic for the 21st century, discover how changing sea levels may impact using a computer display of the Otago coastline at the Department of Marine Science.

For a flaming finale, join the New Scientist World Record Firewalk in the Octagon on 4pm Sunday 11 July. Experience a practical lesson in physics and walk barefoot across burning coals in this world record attempt for the most people firewalking that marks the close of the 2004 New Zealand International Science Festival.
