Futuristic concept from Hyundai shocks Tokyo

Hyundai has grabbed the opening limelight at the Tokyo Motor Show with a startling new concept for a crossover vehicle.

Called the Neos III, the radical newcomer sports a big V8 with four-wheel-drive and an array of futuristic features.

Neos III was developed not in Korea but at the Hyundai Design and Technical Center in Chiba, Japan, so it’s an appropriate fit for the important Tokyo show.

Sporting an all-new, 4.6-litre V8, the concept rides on a 2985mm-long wheelbase. Overall dimensions are 4,980 x 1,960 x 1,675.

Innovative touches include an adaptive front lighting system, infra-red night-vision system, heads-up display and trackball controller for the climate control system.

Industry heads are accustomed to seeing radical concepts from the industry heavyweights at major world shows and Hyundai’s appearance among them reinforces the South Korean brand’s emergence as a major world player.

“Frankly we were surprised ourselves,”commented the General Manager of Hyundai Automotive New Zealand, Philip Eustace, just back from South Korea.

“We’ve been aware the factory is working on some daring new concepts, but Neos III is a bold new move.

“The photos are radical enough, in the flesh the car is a revelation.”
