Does 1080 Poison Increase Bird Populations or Kill Them? An Observation
The Department of Conservation says it needs to use 1080 poison to kill rats and stop rat plagues. Rats have been present in New Zealand forests for over 700 years, and birds populations continue to flourish in some areas, despite the presence of rats. This clip video clip http://youtu.be/Ma7g3Zc1xHw looks at various areas where 1080 poison has never been used, and one example in the "bird-famous" Pureora Forest, where it has. Is 1080 poison helping New Zealand native birds survive, or is it killing them?
