Aotearoa To Set Climate Literacy Record This Weekend With Nationwide “Freskival”

This weekend, New Zealand is set to make history. From 17-19 April, communities from Tāmaki Makaurau to Ōtepoti will unite for Freskival, the most widespread collective climate literacy event Aotearoa has ever seen.
Breaking away from traditional lectures, Freskival brings the Climate Fresk - It’s a high-energy, collaborative workshop - to every corner of the country. The goal is simple but ambitious: to rapidly scale up the nation’s understanding of climate science through collective intelligence and systems thinking.

What is a Climate Fresk?
Based on the rigorous scientific data of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), a Climate Fresk is a hands-on workshop where participants work together to map out the causes and consequences of climate change. In just three hours, groups transform complex data into a visual “fresco” empowering them to move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling equipped for action.
“There is a deep desire across Aotearoa to protect our future, yet many feel unqualified to lead the charge,” says Sue Cardwell of Climate Training Co, the organiser behind the event. “They think they’re the only ones who care, but they couldn't be more wrong. Climate Fresk bridges that gap, building the climate literacy and local connections needed to move the needle.”
"By hosting many Climate Fresks under one festival banner, we amplify impact, build community, and create momentum for climate action across Aotearoa. In April 2026, we aim to run Climate Fresks in more centres than ever before, mostly in universities, community halls, and public spaces. And everyone is welcome!"
A record-breaking weekend
With 15+ workshops scheduled over three days, Freskival is bringing climate science to people in every corner of Aotearoa. Many communities will experience its transformative impact for the first time. Whether you are a scientist, a student, or simply a concerned neighbour, there is a table waiting for you.
Workshops will be held in the following locations

How to get involved
Freskival is designed for everyone - no prior scientific degree required. It’s about connection, clarity, and community-led change. As we face a changing climate, understanding the "why" and "how" is the first step toward a resilient future.
