Kellogg NZ announces support for Auckland City Mission

Kellogg New Zealand announces support for Auckland City Mission to bring breakfast to those in need

As Kiwis prepare to donate to their favourite charities for their Christmas appeals, Kellogg New Zealand will continue the giving into the new year and beyond alongside the Auckland City Mission by providing much needed assistance and cereal to people in need.

This announcement comes ahead of World Food Day this Sunday, 16 October and forms a part of Kellogg’s global Breakfasts for Better Days (BFBD) program, which aims to fight food insecurity and hunger by providing 2.5 billion serves of cereal and snacks across the globe by the end of 2025.

The Auckland City Mission provides food a number of ways through its services. It’s Crisis Care and Community Support Services groups deliver practical support to thousands of individuals and families in desperate need throughout Auckland by providing emergency food parcels and essential household items.

On average, families visiting the Mission for emergency food have $21.94 to spend per person per week on groceries. That’s just $3.13 per person per day. This food insecurity is often the result of families on extremely limited budgets being forced to prioritise expenditure on items like rent, power and transport costs, over groceries.

Food insecurity can be the deciding factor that leads an individual or family to seek the Mission’s support. While the aim is to work with people to find long term solutions to the deeper issues they face, sometimes an emergency food parcel alone provides the means for a family to get back on their feet.

Will Brockbank, Kellogg New Zealand Country Manager said, “Through Breakfasts for Better Days, we are fighting hunger every day and working with organisations such as Auckland City Mission to help achieve this shared goal.”

“Kellogg’s support will ensure the Mission has a consistent supply of cereal to put into these food parcels and means Aucklanders in desperate need are getting off to a good start each day.”

Auckland City Mission’s food parcels are designed to last an individual or family four days. Over the last Financial Year (June 2015 – June 2016) Crisis Care and Community Services distributed 13,714 emergency food parcels, including 10,728 family food parcels, providing families with 534,944 meals.

Chris Farrelly, Auckland City Missioner said, “We have been very impressed with Kellogg’s commitment to addressing food insecurity in all the countries in which it operates. This demonstrates the care Kellogg’s has for the communities which it is part of.”

“Being part of the Breakfasts for Better Days program will ensure more people in the wider Auckland community have access to a great breakfast each day.”

As part of the Mission’s commitment to ensuring that no family goes hungry, it runs a Community Food Programme – Foodlink – which provides a regular supply of food to 35 other community organisations, including food banks, churches and community services from as far north as Kaitaia, to as far south as Thames. Over the last Financial Year (July 2015 – June 2016), Foodlink distributed $1,480,448 worth of food to partnering organisations.

Chris Farrelly added, “Currently our Foodlink programme is in great need of cereal, so support from Kellogg’s Breakfast for Better Days will significantly assist us to increase our reach in this area. Kellogg’s will also enable the mission to provide breakfast cereals at our Homeless Drop-In Centre, which provides breakfast (and dinner) for between 80-120 inner-city rough sleepers 365 days a year.”

In addition to providing cereal, Kellogg’s financial assistance will enable the Mission to upgrade its racking and the purchase of a new forklift for its central distribution centre. This vital equipment will ensure the Mission can store and redistribute more donated food to Aucklanders living in desperate need.

Since Breakfast for Better Days launched in 2013, Kellogg’s has helped provide more than 17 million servings of food to people in need across New Zealand and Australia, exceeding the initial 12 million serves of cereal and snacks commitment.

As a part of the global BFBD commitment, Kellogg Company will be expanding its breakfast programs to 2 million children worldwide, supporting 500,000 farmers, their families and children with Climate Smart Agriculture practices and committing to 45,000 volunteer days by Kellogg’s employees, as well as providing 2.5 billion serves of cereal and snacks by the end of 2025.
