Media Advisory

Ecumenical Church service to support repeal of Section 59

Ahead of the next parliamentary debate on the child discipline bill [the Crimes (Substituted Section 59) Amendment Bill] Church leaders will join with community groups in support of the bill.

At 1pm on Wednesday 2 May an ecumenical church service will take place at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, on the corner of Molesworth and Hill Streets.

Christian leaders from Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Catholic traditions will participate. Author Joy Cowley will read a letter to parents written for the service.

Following the service, some of the participants will form a silent procession to Parliament where they will deliver an extensive list of Christian leaders who support the child discipline bill.
