Heritage and Love - Heritage Month 2005
The Wellington Region's Heritage Promotion Council is taking Heritage Month to heart this year. Throughout June a number of activities, exhibitions and displays have been planned in the wider Wellington region to celebrate the theme of 'Heritage and Love'.
Trains, trams, photos displays, historic churches, buildings - seldom open to the public - films, lectures, and even a quilt display are among the 70 or so exciting and lovely activities scheduled for the month.
Some of the events are: Wellington City Library's display of its heritage collection of Edwardian postcards - many inscribed with touching messages to loved ones, Fell Locomotive Museum's display of stories and the experiences of taking the train 'over the hill' to Wellington, experience with a telephone board where the operator listens in to your most intimate conversations at the Kapiti Coast Museum, or visit Wellington's oldest church - Christ Church to see photos of weddings held there.
Museums, galleries, churches, historical associations and libraries from throughout the Wairarapa, Porirua, Kapiti, Hutt Valley and Wellington regions are involved in the annual event, and all have found love in their activities.
This year is the 12th Annual Wellington Regional Heritage Month. It has been made possible by the generous support from sponsors and volunteers. Special thanks go to the Alexander Turnbull Library, Hutt City Council, Lion Foundation, North City Shopping Centre, Pelorus Trust, Porirua City Council, The Phoenix Trust, Trust House, Unison Trust, Upper Hutt City Council, and the Wellington City Council.
Brochures are available from local information centres and libraries or visit the website www.wellingtonheritagepromotions.org.nz or phone Phillip Vallance 06 378 6268 or Roger Beauchamp 04 233 9729.

Celebrating two of New
Zealanders’ great loves: the beach and television
Sea
Light: photographing Petone Beach – Mark Marriott simply
loves going to the beach in almost any weather and at any
time of the day. Over recent years, he has been recording
the activities that go on there, from the morning after a
storm to sandcastles in the sun to an afternoon swim and an
evening stroll. Marriott’s photographs are set alongside
historical images to form a visual testimony to the Petone
beach.
‘Look Mum, I’m on TV!’ – 45 years ago new
Zealanders joyfully welcomed television into their lives and
began a love affair with the box. Lower Hutt was the centre
of television production for 30 years, with the studio at
Avalon providing opportunities for many ‘locals’ to become
involved in the creation of programmes. Ordinary people,
together with the professionals, have helped to create more
than 200 much loved programmes. Come and see.
