West Wind: what you won’t hear from Meridian

At a meeting to be held in Karori tonight the public have the opportunity to hear information about the West Wind project which they won’t get from Meridian’s hugely expensive publicity campaign.

The information evening is the third organised by Makara residents to inform local people about the impact Meridian’s proposed Makara power plant will have on both the unique Makara region and Karori itself.

Makara Guardians’ spokesperson Jenny Jorgensen said many Wellingtonians have serious concerns about Meridian’s proposal.

“People we’re talking to are concerned that they’re not hearing the full story from Meridian. While state-owned Meridian is spending huge sums on expensive fullpage newspaper ads and glossy TV commercials about thistle seeds blowing around, Wellingtonians are starting to realise they’re being subjected to a slick publicity campaign which doesn’t acknowledge any problems with the power plant,” Mrs Jorgensen said.

“Meridian want the public to believe wind turbines are trouble-free. However the company’s recent confidential settlement allowing for the resettlement of a Te Apiti family living in sight of turbines shows this is not the whole story. The meeting tonight is an opportunity for people to hear what Meridian isn’t telling us,” she said.

The meeting will be held in the Karori Community hall, 235 Karori Road at 7.45pm tonight.

The Makara Guardians are a group of Wellington people concerned with protecting the unique nature of the Makara landscape.
