Youth Employment Cadet Scheme Building Momentum

Manukau Youth Employment Cadet Scheme Building Momentum

The 2005 Manukau Youth Employment Cadet programme, employing 21 students within Manukau City Council, is in progress for the third year.

The first programme in 2003 placed 70% of the cadets into full time employment, the 2004 one, 87%. It is anticipated the third placement will be even more successful.

The project which is a collaborative effort between Manukau City Council, the Tertiary Education Commission and Work and Income, is targeted at unemployed Maori and Pacific Island youth.

Council Education Planner, Filemoni Timoteo says, “This year Council has brought onboard a key private sector partner in the form of the International Forwarder Association with its 12 member organisation to which students will be placed.

“The next stage of the programme will see Council’s role changing to that of initiator and facilitator with a focus on gaining the commitment of private sector partners.”

The current programme, replicated by five other Councils in NZ, provides participants with the opportunity of training linked to the National Qualifications framework and equips youth with skills to enter the workforce and have control over their future.

The Manukau Youth Employment Cadet programme is aligned to the Manukau Employment Strategy, Tomorrow’s Manukau, the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs Youth Guarantee and the Auckland Regional Economic Development Strategy (AREDS).
