Plans to prevent cliff erosion at Shelly Bay Reserve

As part of its continuing coastal erosion programme, Manukau City Council is to upgrade the sea wall and walkway at Shelly Bay Reserve, Beachlands.

The sea wall has deteriorated over the years. The upgrade is needed to strengthen the walkway for safety reasons, and to protect the cliff base by preventing erosion.

The Council welcomes feedback from the public on two upgrade options.

The first option is in line with the existing design, using timber to construct the sea wall. This design allows for planting on top of the sea wall, will take up minimal beach space and will be topped by waves only in the event of a large storm coinciding with a spring tide.

The second option replaces the existing timber sea wall with a rock structure. This option would create more natural lines along the shore but intrude more onto the beach. The structure’s lower height also means that it would be topped by waves more frequently.

Illustrations of the proposals will be on display at Te Puru recreation centre from 31 October, where feedback forms will be available.
