Birds poisoned at Western Springs
More than 80 birds and waterfowl have been found dead or dying at Western Springs from what appears to be a deliberate poisoning.
Thirty birds have died and a further 50 birds are sick from eating poison-laced grain.
A 4kg box of grain, laced with what appears to be alpha-chloralose poison, was found in Western Springs. It appears that the contents were scattered from the lake in Western Springs to Great North Road.
Any sick birds are being taken into the care of bird rescuer Lynn McDonald from Henderson. The poisoning is survivable depending on the dose the birds have eaten and the birds being kept warm.
Auckland City Council parks officers are onsite and collecting any birds which appear to have eaten the poisoned grain.
The poison is not harmful to humans, other large mammals or fish.
The poisoning is being investigated by the Police and ARC pollution prevention.
