Beach Road’s unmistakable afterglow
Auckland City Council has completed stage one of the Beach Road upgrade; improving lighting along the road and on the Wynyard and Ernest Davis walkways.
Jo Wiggins, Group manager of Special projects, said that Beach Road is a key pedestrian link between important CBD destinations, such as the Vector Arena and the Britomart Transport Centre, so it is paramount to provide an environment that is safer, particularly at night, and more attractive for everyone who uses it.
“Beach Road is part of the $134 million 10-year CBD streetscape and open space upgrade programme which centres around creating high quality public environments that people want to be in, as well as providing ease and safety of movement, particularly for pedestrians,” says Ms Wiggins.
Beach Road’s lighting upgrade took five months to complete with the installation of 54 multi-functional poles on the street with reduced-glare lights that:
- increase visibility at bus stops and intersections
- prevent blind spots
- are energy efficient.
New pedestrian lighting was also installed in Ernest Davis walkway, outside the Scene Apartments and the Wynyard walk.
Planning for stage two of the upgrade, which includes footpath improvements, new street furniture and planting will begin mid year.
Beach Road businesses, residents, property owners and the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the design, once the initial stages of this project are underway.
