Cowardly Attack On Elderly
Woman
A retired 86-year-old Te Awamutu nurse is
recovering in Waikato Hospital after she was allegedly
attacked by several youths in the town on Wednesday.
Ida Simmons has a broken left elbow and two fractures to her pelvis. Police say the attack happened in a walkway between Stirling Sports and the National Bank on Alexandra St about 10.30am. Her handbag, containing $30 and a number of credit cards, was stolen.
Police arrested and charged a 16-year-old with aggravated robbery. The youth appeared in the Te Awamutu District court yesterday and was remanded on bail without plea with a 24-hour curfew.
Mrs Simmons yesterday said she had acted against her best instincts when she went down the walkway. However she was in great pain from an ongoing back injury and wanted to get back to her car quickly. It was desperation which made her go down a walkway she felt uncomfortable about, she said.
Mrs Simmons has three children who all gathered at her bedside yesterday to support the grandmother of seven and great grandmother of two.
"This has knocked my confidence. I don't know what the future holds." Mrs Simmons is a widow. Her husband served as a naval officer in the coastal forces during World War II.
She revealed she had already two hip replacements and now feared having more operations. Son Brian Simmons said the alleged attack was a "cowardly action" and such unprovoked assaults on elderly woman had to be stopped.
