Nelson Arts Festival Sculpture Exhibition

Media Release
Manifest: Nelson Arts Festival Sculpture Exhibition

Works by leading New Zealand sculptors at Albion Square
‘Evident to the senses - apparent to the mind.’

Work from 12 national and local sculptors is arriving in Nelson this week to go on show in a new feature of the Nelson Arts Festival that starts on Thursday - Manifest, the sculpture exhibition in Albion Square.

Manifest exhibition manager Tim Wraight said 12 artists were selected to submit completed works for display outdoors, with smaller pieces to go on show in the NMIT foyer across the road from the open air exhibition space.

Wraight said he was very exited at the calibre of the artists and the way their works would come together to create a dynamic and very contemporary exhibition of three dimensional art pieces.

“Juliet Novena Sorrel from Otago is bringing three highly highly evocative works including two 'Birds' made from translucent brass mesh with ceramic faces,” he said. “We’ll have Christchurch artist Alan Coleman’s wire mesh mother and child caught in motion across the space above the exhibition, and Derek Ball from Richmond (former senior lecturer in sculpture at Otago Polytechnic School of Fine Arts) will be making a process based work during the exhibition, casting the surface of one of the historic trees in Albion Square and reproducing it in translucent resin.”

This year the works have set prices and will not be auctioned. Wraight said this is going to give the public a range of financially more accessible works as well as showing other aspects of the artists’ practice. Works will be on sale at the site through Fishers Fine Arts website, fishersonlineart.com.”
