ARC joins appeal to save Building 5

The Auckland Regional Council today voted to join the Environment Court appeal to save Building 5 within the Greenlane Hospital complex.

Building 5 is owned by the Auckland District Health Board which received consent from Auckland City Council to demolish the building earlier this year.

ARC Parks and Heritage Committee Chair Sandra Coney says the Auckland Regional Policy Statement aims to protect heritage resources where they are of regional significance.

“The collection of older buildings within the Greenlane Hospital complex represents the development of the New Zealand hospital system from the 1880s,” she says.

“Building 5, which was originally the Male Infirmary, sits within a precinct containing hospital and health care buildings of different eras including the nearby Costley Block, which is the only building within the Greenlane Hospital complex scheduled for heritage protection. It shows the evolution of health services through 120 years.”

Sandra Coney says the discussion around Building 5 has highlighted the need for territorial authorities within the region to take a consistent approach when dealing with heritage issues within their district plans.
