Hospital’s January Joints Week Again Proves to be a Success for Southland Patients

Southland Hospital Orthopaedic patients again benefited from a quieter period in January with extra hip and knee surgery being provided for 15 Southland patients as part of a “January Joints Week” initiative.

Chief Operating Officer Lexie O’Shea said the week was a hospital wide initiative in which staff displayed great team work to ensure that an additional 15 patients received their surgeries.

“Normally we schedule about four to five theatre sessions a week for Orthopaedic surgery. However thanks to the great effort and dedication shown from all staff including nurses, physiotherapists, surgeons, anaesthetists and administration, we were able to hold nine sessions in total.”

During these sessions an additional seven hip and five knee surgeries as well as three non-joint procedures went ahead – providing relief and a positive start to the year for 15 extra patients.

The five day joint surgery blitz followed on from the success of last year’s efforts where in January 2008 additional patients received hip and knee surgery.

Southland Hospital also continues to hold weekend surgery sessions in both orthopaedics and ophthalmology, enabling additional patients to have their elective hip, knee or cataract surgery performed.
