One Auckland Trust In Broad Support Of Recommendations
The One Auckland Trust says it is in
broad support of the thrust of the Royal Commission
recommendations for the reform of local governance in the
Auckland region.
The Trust, which began a public campaign for a new simplified structure for the region two years ago, says the Commission has clearly listened to Auckland and the proposed new Auckland Council has the potential to greatly increase the quality and efficiency of planning and decision making in the region.
“An important aspect of the recommended changes will be clarification of the roles and responsibilities of the four urban and two rural local councils recommended by the Commission.” says the Trust.
“The Trust also questions the rationale for a special community board in a central Auckland/waterfront area, which the Commission says should not be part of a local council area. We note that all of the publicly owned land along the waterfront will be in common ownership if the Commission’s recommendations are accepted, and believe there must be a less complicated way to ensure that this area is redeveloped in the best possible way for the region.’
The Trust says it will study the recommendations in detail and may make further public comment when it has done so
