Wave buoy out of action
Wave buoy out of action
For the next few weeks finding out what the Bay of Plenty’s surf is doing won’t be as easy as surfing the net, with Environment Bay of Plenty’s popular wave buoy monitoring system coming on-shore for repairs.
Data from the wave buoy, which can be accessed via Environment Bay of Plenty’s website www.envbop.govt.nz is popular with boaties and surfers in the region. It records information and feeds it into the website about wave heights, water temperature and wave frequency.
Environment Bay of Plenty Data Services Manager Glenn Ellery said the buoy is being removed today (Thursday 6 August) for repairs and general maintenance.
“We’ll be upgrading the communications module, installing a transparent dome covering and giving it a general spruce up,” Mr Ellery said.
“This will hopefully improve the quality of the information that the buoy transmits to us and in turn improve the information we can supply to the public.”
Mr Ellery said the buoy was expected to be out of the water for a few weeks, and updates would be posted on the Wave Buoy page on the website.
