cancelled
For immediate release:11.15am Wednesday 30
September 2009
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management has confirmed the Tsunami warning has been cancelled and downgraded to a potential threat advisory.
The Ministry has advised coastal areas to remain vigilant because the first wave is sometimes not the largest and waves may continue for many hours. The possibility of strong currents also remains.
A wave recording of 40cm was recorded at the East Cape tidal gauge, while other monitoring has recorded little change in wave heights.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council have stood down their Emergency Management Centre (EOC) and Whakatane District Council has closed its EOC.
