Football Fans Given Chance to Win Campaign Flags

Football fans who buy a ticket for the next Wellington Phoenix match at Westpac Stadium will go in the draw to win one of 40 ‘One Shot for Glory’ flags signed by the team’s All Whites contingent.

The flags lined the city’s streets during the All Whites’ FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign and are in hot demand following the team’s historic victory.

Seven of the Phoenix team – including coach Ricki Herbert – were part of the All Whites outfit that made history at a sell-out Westpac Stadium on Saturday night. They will sign the flags following training tomorrow as they gear up for their own record-matching opportunity on December 4.

The Hyundai A-League team is undefeated in 13 matches at Westpac Stadium and can equal the competition record (held by Sydney FC in season 2006/07) of the longest unbeaten home streak with a win or draw against Melbourne Victory.

“Saturday was definitely one out of the box – there was so much at stake,” says Positively Wellington Tourism Chief Executive David Perks. “But the passion, the chants and the bare chested shirt swirling wasn’t a one-off – it’s all part of the Westpac Stadium football experience. Like the results suggest – you absolutely positively can’t beat the Phoenix in Wellington.”

Positively Wellington Tourism has been supporting the Wellington Phoenix this season through its events-based television advertising and has donated the flags to the team for the giveaway promotion.

“We see the Phoenix as an incredible asset to our city and a great reason for people to visit. With games often around 7pm on a Friday night, it’s the perfect excuse to knock off work in the afternoon and head to Wellington for the weekend.”
