Council urges residents to conserve water this summer

ROTORUA 23.12.09: Fresh water is increasingly becoming the world’s most valuable resource and Rotorua District Council (RDC) is reminding residents not to waste it.

The council is asking people to practice some environmental sustainability this summer by being mindful of water usage and reducing water waste wherever possible.

RDC utilities operations manager Eric Cawte says although Rotorua is fortunate to have reliable natural supplies of good quality water, every litre consumed uses electricity and impacts on our environment.

He says outside water use, including garden and lawn watering, car and house washing, and children’s pools, contributes greatly to high summer water consumption.

“During hot dry weather, it’s natural for people to want more water for various purposes, but there are a number of tips which people can make use of to make sure wastage is minimised.

“Check plumbing for leaks and get them fixed promptly, and report any leaks in the public network or any excessive wastage on private property to the council.

“We’re also asking people to keep garden and lawn watering to a minimum and to use hand held hoses rather than sprinklers as they are more water efficient.

“Keeping paths and driveways clean by sweeping them rather than hosing them down helps save waters as does using a bucket of water to wash cars, boats and houses, rather than running hoses.

“And please don’t leave taps or hoses running unnecessarily around the home any time this summer.”
