Busy summer for district library
ROTORUA 07.01.10: This summer has been one of the busiest on record for the Rotorua District Library, with over 5,000 items being checked out on a single day.
Library marketing & promotions officer Sue Heke says the first day open after the New Year break saw 4,756 library items checked in and 5,024 checked out.
“The check-out figure is the second highest issue statistic on record for the library.”
Ms Heke also says library issues have risen 5% and enrolments are up 28% for the past six months.
“The library’s recent surge in popularity could be attributed to the recent upgrade and expansion, and the introduction of several new products and features such as self-issue terminals and free wireless internet for library members. It may also in part be a reaction to the tightened economic climate.
“The library has increasingly become a regular haunt for people who enjoy its modern services, easy atmosphere, the new café and of course over 150,000 fantastic books to choose from.”
For those looking for a good book bargain to add to their own collection Friends of the Library’s book sales take place at Kuirau Park in the old tea kiosk on a regular basis. The next sale is on Saturday 16 January from 9am to 1pm.
Starting in February the library is also again holding its popular Reading Round sessions for adult readers who get together to discuss things literary, enjoy guest speakers and talk about book they have enjoyed. The first Reading Round for the new year is on Wednesday 24 February at 10.30am in the library’s Haupapa Room.
The Rotorua District Library is located at 1127 Haupapa Street, and open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 8pm, and Saturdays 9.30am to 4pm.
