Seeking Developers For New Marine Precinct

MEDIA RELEASE
29 April 2010

Seeking Developers For Tauranga’s New Marine Precinct

Priority One, the Western Bay of Plenty sub-region’s economic development agency, and Tauranga City Council have formally issued a “Request for Expressions of Interest” (EOI) for a new multi million dollar marine precinct development in Tauranga.

Harbour Central Marine Precinct is an initiative that will see a state-of-the-art marine business park developed on land beside the Tauranga harbour bridge. An economic impact study has forecast up to 520 new jobs and over $100 million of revenue into the economy each year from a development of this type.

The EOI seeks proposals from potential developers and investors to move forward with a staged development of the 5.1 hectare site on Tauranga City Council-owned land at Sulphur Point. It has been designed to enable those submitting proposals to outline their strengths and indicate the conditions under which they would see the proposed development being successful, meeting the requirements of the developer, the local marine industry and Tauranga City Council.

The EOI welcomes innovative ideas and suggestions from proponents, particularly in relation to staging of the project. Responses to the EOI are to be submitted by 31st May 2010. Successful candidates may then be offered the opportunity to prepare and submit a further proposal focusing on more detailed design, operational management and the financial and legal framework for the ongoing development.

Priority One chief executive Andrew Coker says “The initiative has been designed to attract the multi-billion dollar international marine industry to the region. Working in tandem with Auckland and Whangarei, it is likely we could bring more vessels and super yachts from the Northern Hemisphere, consolidating New Zealand’s reputation as the world’s premier boat building and marine refit destination.”
