Northern Gateway Toll Road 12-monthly operating report available

Detailed information on the operations of the Northern Gateway Toll Road for the period from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010 is now available in a report published today by the NZ Transport Agency.

The toll road’s first 12-monthly operating report shows that just over five million trips were made on the road during the year, four percent higher than forecast, bringing the total number of journeys since the toll road opened in January 2009 to just under seven million.

NZTA Regional Director for Auckland and Northland Wayne McDonald said the higher than forecast traffic volumes had contributed to greater than expected revenue collection, with paid toll revenue 4% ahead of budget.

Key results for the 12 months to 30 June 2010 include:

• The overall compliance rate (percentage of trips that have been paid) on the road has increased to 96 percent
• Over $6 million in revenue was collected to repay debt for construction of the road, about six percent higher than forecast for this period
• The average cost per transaction to operate the tolling system for the 12 month period was $0.73
• Nearly half (49 percent) of trips taken on the toll road during the 12 month period were by account holders
• 55 percent of casual users paid manually at the kiosks, 27 percent paid using the web, 16 percent paid via the contact centre and two percent paid by mail.

Mr McDonald said several changes had been introduced to improve services for toll road customers during the 12 month period, including extending the toll payment period from three to five days and upgrading the payment website for easier use.
