Mini New Year boom for tradespeople

Mini New Year boom for tradespeople

Rather than looking to quit smoking or lose weight, this year people have been making the resolution to renovate and repair their homes and gardens.

Builderscrack.co.nz, a site where homeowners get quotes from tradespeople, has reported their strongest ever start to the year, with the number of jobs posted in the first week of January up 50% on last year. Builderscrack.co.nz director Jeremy Wyn-Harris said “

This has been a much better summer for tradespeople around the country than last year, and the performance in 2011 has built on that growth further, which is a positive sign for the New Year. We are also seeing people more willing to commit to larger jobs like reroofing the house than we saw this time last year. A number of customers have told us that getting their homes fixed up or renovated has been their New Years resolution”.

Tradespeople have been responding quickly to the new jobs “We have been surprised what a short break a number of tradespeople took over the holiday period. Many tradespeople are still feeling the bite of the downturn, so they are enthusiastic to quote on jobs”.

The strongest growth areas were Wellington, Taupo, Rotorua, Tauranga and Christchurch.

The top 5 jobs categories posted were:

New roof or roofing repair
Building or repairing a fence
Bathroom renovation
House painting
Laying new carpet
