Experienced Councillor to Stand in Howick By-Election

Experienced Manukau Councillor, Maggie Burrill, to Stand in Howick By- Election

Botany resident and previous Manukau City Councillor Maggie Burrill will stand in the Howick By- election as an Independent Candidate. As an Independent representative, Maggie will work hard to achieve the best outcome for the community. Maggie will do this by voting on proposals based on their merits and not the politics.

Maggie Burrill is a lawyer with particular interests in ethics and professional standards, and believes that good planning should lie at the heart of every community.

“My interest in planning and the future of the city is why I am standing for election. I have the knowledge and experience in planning law and projects that I know will benefit the Howick community and the Auckland region”, says Maggie.

Maggie Burrill was elected to the Botany Community Board when it was first formed in 2004 and served as its Deputy Chair. Elected to the Manukau City Council in 2007, Maggie was a full-time Councillor, chaired the Audit & Risk committee, was Deputy Leader of the City Form & Environment Portfolio and served on all major Committees.

Maggie Burrill believes it is essential for the new Auckland council to work cooperatively and has been researching the effects of amalgamation on foreign cities.

“I want to use the lessons of other cities to ensure Auckland emerges as a world leader, a vibrant, prosperous city, one where our children wish return.”

“The tone set by the new Council is an indication of how Auckland will progress in the future. I will be a strong voice for the people of Howick, and incorporate the needs of our community into city planning through the even-handed spend of our rates across wider Auckland.”

“Your Council must be measured by improvements made to the quality of life for residents through parks and community facilities, not just roads and shopping centres,” says Maggie Burrill.
