3 NZSO Principals + 3 NZSM Faculty = 1 exhilarating concert

3 NZSO Principals + 3 NZSM Faculty = 1 exhilarating concert

Three principals from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and three of New Zealand School of Music's faculty will present a very special concert on Thursday 20 October.

NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen, Acting Principal Viola Julia Joyce and Principal Cello Andrew Joyce will be joined by NZSM’s Head of Strings Dr Martin Riseley, Prof Donald Maurice on viola and Head of Cello Studies Inbal Megiddo in the penultimate concert of the NZSM’s 2011 Hunter series.

“This particular combination of players is a very exciting collaboration,” says Elizabeth Hudson, Director of the New Zealand School of Music. “Audiences will realize that they are in for a real treat as between them these six players bring together an incredible depth of talent and expertise. The combination also allows them to present fantastic string repertoire works that are seldom heard in concert.”

The programme includes the sublime Schubert Quintet in C for two cellos and Tchaikovsky’s Romantic masterpiece, Souvenir de Florence for string sextet.

“Chamber music for strings is so dominated by the string quartet it is a revelation when the extra instruments are introduced,” says Dr Martin Riseley. “The additional cello and viola lines mean that the harmony is enriched and the instruments are able to explore their range and interplay with greater freedom. In these works by Schubert and Tchaikovsky the result is exhilarating for both players and listeners.”
