NZTA advises motorists not to use Motu Road as an alternative route

Acting BOP state highways manager Andrew Scott is urging motorists affected by the SH2 Waioeka Gorge closure to use SH35 around the East Cape or SH5 through Taupo after hearing reports that drivers are using the Motu Road.

Mr Scott says the Motu Road has been now been closed by the Opotiki District Council and the Gisborne District Council so that access can still be maintained for local residents.

"Motu Road is not a state highway and therefore we are unable to manage traffic flows and ensure road standards are suitable at all times for driving."

Mr Scott says drivers should use the alternative state highway routes even if it will mean longer travel times.

"The safety of motorists comes first and although it can be frustrating taking the alternative routes, we want to ensure that people get to their destination as safely as possible", he said.

Mr Scott said the NZTA are working as quickly as possible to try and stabilise the Waioeka Gorge from further slip movement and to remove debris so that the Gorge can be re-opened, we thank motorists for their patience whilst we are continuing this work.

Opotiki District Council Works Manager, Ian Castles says Motu Rd has been closed to traffic at the 37km mark so access can be maintained for local residents.
