Christchurch Pops celebrates 1st birthday at Rapaki Rd!
The Christchurch
Pops Choir turns one this week and is celebrating
by
singing for a gathering of Rapaki Rd residents hard
hit by the
earthquakes.
The Pops year has consisted of
learning repertoire for 10
performances, conducting two
rounds of auditions resulting in more
than 70 sopranos,
altos, tenors and basses getting together weekly
to
rehearse, and its first mini-tour outside
Christchurch.
Next up, the choir has received a special
invitation to perform on
Saturday, 9 June at a private
function for Rapaki Rd residents who are
trying to keep a
sense of community in stressful times.
“POPS was started
because there were limited opportunities for the
city’s
rock, pop, jazz, gospel, folk and musical theatre singers
to
perform following the earthquakes. We needed to get
together for
ourselves and to provide musical events for
the people of
Christchurch,” Choir Director Luke Di
Somma says.
“We’re performers, we needed an outlet for
that. And we can well
understand the need to keep coming
together to reaffirm what’s good
about our lives now
and support each other, which is what the
residents of
Rapaki Rd are doing,” Mr Di Somma says.
With songs from
artists such as Adele, Queen, Manhattan Transfer,
Hollie
Smith, Michael Jackson and Goldenhorse, the Christchurch
Pops
Choir has been wowing local audiences with its fresh
take on choir
singing and recently went on the road to
perform in support of the
Methven Heritage
Centre.
“We’re hoping we can share a bit of sunshine
for these residents in
the form of popular music,
that’s what we’re all about. And then
we’ve
planned our own event to share a birthday cake and enjoy a
bit
of a party together, which will no doubt include more
singing!” Mr Di
Somma
says.
