Artistic expression in Fiordland to object to
the monorail and tunnel projects
Entries are being sought for an art competition expressing outrage at the proposed monorail and tunnel projects in Fiordland.
The Creative Artworks Competition coincides with an exhibition and sale of donated art to raise funds for the campaign group Save Fiordland and its fight to stop the proposed tunnel and monorail encroaching into the protected areas of Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area.
Anyone of any age can enter the Creative Artworks Competition, with any piece of art using any medium. The theme is “Over the top and wacky” to emphasise the extreme nature of the tunnel and monorail proposals which would bore through mountains and destroy tens of thousands of trees for no public benefit.
The deadline for entries to the competition, or to donate a piece of art for sale, is 27 September. The competition entries, art exhibition and sale will be held on 28th & 29th September (start of the school holidays) at The Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas, Lake Front Drive, Te Anau.
Local campaigner Kit Ghata, who is coordinating the competition and exhibition, says: “I had the idea for these events after realising that young people in particular were not fully aware of the consequences of the destruction these proposals would cause to these special areas. The challenge is to make a piece of art that expresses the extreme nature of these proposals that would cause so much damage. No-one seems to want to bore through the Mount Cook area to get to the West Coast. It’s just as ridiculous to even contemplate the idea of a tunnel from the Routeburn to the Hollyford. Art can be a great way to show we care.”
