Friends of the Fallen Rise to Mega Move Challenge

A healthy donation of almost $12,000 will be handed over to the Fallen Heroes trust this Sunday in exchange for 140 soldiers from the same unit as those recently killed in Afghanistan giving a helping hand during the Hornby Mitre 10 MEGA move.

Mitre 10 MEGA is relocating to a new site this weekend and asked for help from the Burnham based soldiers in exchange for the donation. The Army has chosen to support the New Zealand Fallen Heroes Trust.

The NZ Fallen Heroes Trust was established by a group of people in the community with strong ties to the NZ Defence Force who saw a role for direct, practical support to the families of those men and women who were injured, wounded or killed whilst serving their country. Loosely modelled on similar international initiatives, the Trust aims to fund projects that make a real difference to the lives of our heroes and their families.

Baden Ewart, the Colonel of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, is one of the trustees. “The NZ Army is small and close knit. Looking after our mates is paramount to what we do,” he says. “We have all been affected by the ten deaths in Afghanistan, and know their families need help. We know that the soldiers who suffered serious injuries will need on-going support. These things cost, and this is where the trust can help.

“We are very grateful to Mitre 10 Mega for their generous donation, and to the soldiers who have given up their Sunday evening to help out. Thank you”, said Mr Ewart

Mai FM will also be at the move to hand over a cheque to the trust for $1525.40, raised in gold coin donations on the door of their “The Fallen” gig that was held on 14 September.
