Burwood School Students and Teachers Tuck in
to Enjoy a Free Lunch

A question posed to Facebook fans led to a competition giving local Christchurch schools the chance to win a free lunch for their entire school. The Palms Shopping Centre asked via their Facebook page what they could do to increase the ‘happiness factor’ in the local community. One mother said the way to cheer up adults is by making their kids happy, and suggested a sponsored lunch at a local school.

“We received many ideas from the community following this post, but the lunch idea really jumped out at us,” says The Palms Shopping Centre Manager Simon Carter. “We really value our local schools, for many of whom it has been a difficult year, and wanted to acknowledge this by giving staff and students a treat.”

The Palms invited local schools to encourage teachers and parents to nominate their school to win the free lunch. The response was overwhelming with close to 1,000 nominations received.

After rallying staff, students and friends for support, Burwood School received the most nominations, winning the free lunch. With 238 students and 30 staff, Burwood School is looking forward to having a special celebration together, ahead of merging with Windsor School in the near future.

Jacquie Ching, a teacher and representative of Burwood School, was very excited to announce the news to teachers at a morning tea break this week.

“We are all really looking forward to the lunch,” says Jacquie. “We will announce the news to students in this week’s newsletter and are excited to all come together for a fun event.”

Subway has partnered with The Palms for the lunch and will supply all students and teachers with a 6 inch subway, juice box and cookie at the lunch event on Friday 10 May 2013.

Simon Carter says this competition is one of many planned initiatives for The Palms Shopping Centre to support local schools in the area. Schools are also invited to utilise space within the centre to promote their services and activities to the local community.
