Live trout heading for Boat Show

Live trout heading for Boat Show

It's a city surrounded by salt water but Auckland's fanatical fishermen are being urged this week to give fresh water a go.

Fish & Game experts from the Eastern Region office have a stand at the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show, which starts on Thursday, promoting the phenomenal trout fishing potential of Rotorua's many lakes and streams.

It's the fourth year Fish & Game have brought their live trout aquarium and expertise north for the annual show and Fish & Game officer Mark Sherburn has noticed a common theme.

"Every year we come across keen Auckland fishos who are intrigued by the trout scene but don't know how to take the first step," Mr Sherburn said. "We give them tips and advice and remind them that Rotorua is one of the best trout destinations in the world because of the variety of lakes, the diversity of fishing and the family-friendly location."

More than 35,000 people will visit the show over the four days and the Fish & Game stand is always popular, particularly for kids keen to see brown, rainbow and tiger trout up close. The stand will also feature fishing equipment and information on Fish & Game's opposition to proposed changes to the Resource Management Act, as well as maps and brochures on how to find Bay of Plenty's best fresh water fish.

The Boat Show is ideal timing for winter shoreline fishing in the Rotorua district, with some decent sized trout being caught in monitoring traps in the last few weeks as the fish head upstream to spawn.
