Collaboration brings link trail success

Upper Hutt City Council, St Patrick’s College Silverstream, and Greater Wellington Regional Council have all worked together to create a link track to the Hutt River Trail.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 11 JUL 2013— What was once an unofficial mud-beaten shortcut is now a clearly articulated and finished walkway in Heretaunga thanks to the collaborative approach of Upper Hutt City Council, St Patrick’s College Silverstream and Greater Wellington Regional Council.

Upper Hutt’s Parks and Reserves Officer Conrad King describes the path as a real asset for the community. “We have a few finishing touches to finalise, but the path is already proving popular for local residents and Hutt River Trail users.”

The path links Heretaunga Park, at the North end of Kiwi Street with the popular Hutt River Trail. It begins at the North-western corner of the soccer field and runs along the boundary line between St Patrick’s College and the Royal Wellington Golf Club. The link track meets the Hutt River Trail in a T-intersection at the northern boundaries of the College and Golf Club land.

St Patrick’s College Silverstream has effectively donated the land for use. Though it still remains part of their land package, they have allowed the Councils to create the walkway for public use which has been fenced off from the remaining property.

The project was jointly initiated and funded by Upper Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council. Upper Hutt City Council will continue to maintain the walkway as part of its extensive walkway network.

One local resident on his morning walk described the path as being “the best money Council had spent in twenty years.”

The path is still to be signposted but is now officially open to the public.
