Mayoral Contenders Asked For Transport Vision

The Campaign for Better Transport today confirmed a public meeting to discuss Auckland's transport future, ahead of this year's Auckland Council election.

Contenders for the mayoralty, including current Mayor Len Brown, John Palino, John Minto and Rev. Uesifili Unasa, will be at the meeting to put forward their vision for transport in Auckland. There will also be an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions of the candidates at the meeting, which will be held on 11th September at 6:45pm, at the Ellen Melville Hall, Freyberg Place in central Auckland.

Spokesperson Cameron Pitches says transport is always a hot topic at election time.

"Every Aucklander knows how unpredictable our roading and public transport systems can be. This meeting will allow people to ask the prospective Mayors what, exactly, they intend to do about it."

The independent lobby group will also present their own transport vision at the meeting. The "Congestion Free Network" is a collaboration between the Auckland Transport Blog, Generation Zero and The Campaign for Better Transport, and is a blueprint which lays out a future integrated public transport network in Auckland, staged at five yearly intervals through to 2030.

"We think the Congestion Free Network is an affordable plan that offers fast and frequent public transport services, something that has been lacking in Auckland for too long," said Mr Pitches.

"We will be looking for feedback from the candidates on the Congestion Free Network, as well as original ideas of their own."
