Seniors Week returns to Upper Hutt

The ninth annual Seniors Week kicks off in Upper Hutt on Monday 23 September.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 18 SEP 2013—Next week ushers in an exciting calendar of events for the over 60s to recognise the contribution seniors make to our community. The activities will include an Antiques Roadshow, dancing, musical entertainment, and a special Grandparents’ Storytime.

Upper Hutt Seniors Week is in its ninth year. An original initiative to celebrate International Day of the Older Person has been expanded to a whole week of events and festivities.

Monday 23 September

Have a Go Fun Sessions
Upper Hutt Central Library

12.30 pm Rock ‘n’ Roll

Tuesday 24 September

Remembering the Way We Were
Upper Hutt City Library, 12.00 – 2.00 pm

Wander down memory lane with a large selection of photos from our heritage collection covering 1940 through to the1980s. Share your knowledge, reminisce and help us preserve Upper Hutt’s past. Free entry all day for over 60s! Enjoy your favourite pool, all day, for no charge.

Wednesday 25 September

Give it a Go Day
Riverstone Recreation Hall, 10.00 am – 12.00 pm

Grab a friend or two and have some active fun playing a variety of low impact sports followed by tea and biscuits. Suitable for all fitness levels and brought to you by the Activation team. Bring comfortable clothes, suitable shoes for exercise, and a water bottle.

Watch local artists produce works of art and create your own masterpiece.

Renee Maurice sings

Renee will be performing old favourites. Join us for a cup of tea and a sing-along.

Mayoral Quiz

Test your knowledge with our Quizmaster Mayor Wayne Guppy. Teams or individuals, pit your wits against the master.

Be Safe, Be Well Expo
Upper Hutt Central Library, 2.00 pm

A range of services and community groups will be available to answer your questions about keeping well and safe. The expo will include representatives from Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office, Freedom Alarms, Wellington Free Ambulance, and many more.

Friday 27 September

The Gloaming Tour
Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre, 10.00 – 11.00 am

Join an exclusive tour through Weta artist Jonny Fraser-Allen’s The Gloaming with Director of Expressions, Leanne Wickham. Hear insights into the works and behind the scenes stories.

Antiques Roadshow
Upper Hutt Central Library, 11.00 am – 4.00 pm

Grandparents Storytime

Bring your grandchildren along for storytime in the Children’s Library.

Andrea Curtis, Upper Hutt City Council’s Director of Community Services says, “Our Mature Residents Survey showed that we need to be providing more activities for seniors. We hope those over 60 will attend the wide variety of interesting events and programmes on offer this year. It’s a great chance to get out of the house, use your Gold Card for transport, meet new people, and have a good time. Best of all, it’s all free!”
