Italy Comes to Newmarket
Newmarket is to host the largest Italian Cultural Festival in New Zealand.
The Festival Italiano season starts with the opening of the Italian Film Festival at the Rialto cinema on 25 September, then leads into an entire week of special Italian events throughout Newmarket – finishing on the 3rd of October.
The highlight of the Festival will be a huge Street Festival on Newmarkets upmarket Osborne Street, hosted by Aucklands Italian community, on 29 September.
From 11 am to 4 pm the street will become pedestrian-only, hosting al fresco restaurants and eating areas, an Italian market with over 30 stalls, and live music and entertainment with Italian MC Paolo Rotondo, Italian DJ Luca Montagni and a few surprises.
“This will be our biggest and best festival yet,” promises Sandra Fresia, President of the Dante Alighieri Society of Auckland.
Other events include Italian Themed Street Theatre performed by the talented comediens at Con Artist – featuring Leonardo Da Vincenzo and his portraits for passers-by. Pasta making courses at The Homestore in The Rialto Centre, The Ferrari Club of New Zealand gathering over 2 days in Lumsden Green and the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride for Prostate Cancer on Italian Scooters on Sunday 29th September from Pt Chev to Newmarket.
