One Victoria Trust Thrilled With Meteor Proposal Acceptance

The One Victoria Trust says they are “thrilled” with the outcome of today’s Hamilton City Council meeting which saw the Meteor Proposal unanimously accepted.

“This is an historic moment and a huge step forward for Hamilton’s creative community,” One Victoria Trust chairperson Dr William Farrimond says.

“We would like to thank the Hamilton City Council for their unanimous vote in favour of the proposal today,” Dr Farrimond says. “It is indeed a vote of confidence and the Trust looks forward to working with the Council to create a vibrant hub for theatre and the Arts in Hamilton.”

“The last major hurdle has been cleared,” says Dr Farrimond. “Now the hard work begins. It’s my belief that the One Victoria Trust, supported by the Hamilton arts community, the City Council and the public, is up to the task.”

The One Victoria Trust wishes to sincerely thank Mayor Julie Hardaker and all the Hamilton City Councillors for their support for the proposal, but wishes to reserve special mention for Angela O’Leary, who has championed the proposal since the beginning, and Dave Macpherson, who made a point of bringing the issue before Council.

Full statement from Dr Farrimond:

At 2.15 p.m. today, 26th September, 2013, the Hamilton City Council unanimously accepted our proposal to take over the management and running of the Meteor Theatre, one of our city’s treasures in the world of the performing arts.

We are grateful for the opportunity to realise the potential of this space and look forward to a productive and creative collaboration with members of our local performing arts’ community. This community is vibrant, established and, in many cases, long-standing. Our policy is to include, without limitation, theatre, music, dance, moving image, inter-arts, writing, and the visual arts.

For too long, too many people have been excluded from our performance venues because of high user-costs, often imposed by bureaucratic systems unsympathetic to the working realities of individuals and groups who are non-commercial in nature but enormously creative in expression.

Our purpose with the Meteor is to foster, develop, nurture, and facilitate performing arts in our community, by providing a facility which attracts and enable a range of artists including, especially, young people.

We look forward to engaging in dialogue with all members of our creative community, and our thanks, today, are directed at the members of our City Council who have so generously endorsed this initiative.
