Nelson Suburban Club Raise Over $1800

Women celebrating women at the Nelson Suburban Club. Over $1800 raised.

On Saturday 7th March over 120 women joined the Nelson Suburban Club’s first female president, Mrs Leigh Bromell, to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The inaugural event was attended by local women of all ages who gathered to enjoy a high tea, donated by the club.

Professional social butterfly, Breffni O’Rourke, introduced the line up of speakers who all delivered short inspirational talks. Thesewomen of influence represented their chosen fields of government, the arts, business, education and medicine within the Nelson/Tasman community.

· Judene Edgar - Councillor, TDC

· Alison Boswijk - International Projects Manager, World of Wearable Art

· Dot Kettle - CEO, Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce

· Cathy Ewing - Principal, Nelson College for Girls

· Annette Milligan - Director, INP Medical Clinic

Over $1800 was raised on the day, $1200 from a charity auction and the remainder from ticket sales. All monies raised will be split between three local female focussed charities.

· Nelson Regional Breast & Gynaecological Cancer Trust

· Nelson Women’s Refuge

· Nelson Women’s Centre

Club president, Mrs Bromell acknowledged support from all the local businesses that had donated charity auction items together with the MC, auctioneer and line up of speakers who had given their valuable time. She said, “It was heartening to see so many women in our community enjoy this inspiring event and truly celebrate each other.” She continues, “I believe everybody had a fine time, there were certainly calls at the end of the day to make this an annual event.”

The Nelson Suburban Club, based in Tahunanui, has recently appointed a new executive committee and finance management committee, which includes Mrs Bromell as the club’s first female president in its forty-five year history.
