Centreport Accepts Outcome in Health & Safety Case

CentrePort says it accepts the District Court sentencing following a hearing into the death of port worker and colleague Mark Samoa, on 20 January 2013.

CentrePort regrets the accident and apologises to Mark’s family and loved ones.

It followed 15 years of incident-free pulp handling operations and demonstrated the potentially tragic consequences when human error and an unforeseen gap in standard operating procedures combine.

CentrePort Chief Executive Blair O’Keeffe said, “CentrePort takes its safety and employer responsibilities very seriously”.

“Following the accident, we have been focused on supporting Mark’s family and making improvements as part of our unwavering commitment to safety in the workplace”.

The company notes that the court’s decision as to level of fault was consistent with CentrePort’s early acknowledgement of fault, which unfortunately was declined by the prosecution, resulting in a lengthy court case.

“The thoughts of all the team at CentrePort continue to be with Mark’s family." Mr O’Keeffe said.
