Southern Region’s finest homes announced

A Wanaka new build and a Queenstown renovation have been revealed as this year’s top Southern homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Southern Registered Master Builders 2015 House of the Year.

The Breen Construction Company took out four regional awards with the Wanaka home, including a Gold Award and category win for the Westpac New Home over $2 million award, as well as the Southern Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the 2015 House of the Year. The company also won the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award.

A J Saville Builder was awarded the Supreme Award for the Southern Registered Master Builders 2015 Renovation of the Year, as well as a Gold Award and overall category win for the SafetyMate Renovation Award over $500,000. The company also won a Gold Award in the Carters New Home $1 million - $2 million for another property.

The Breen Construction Company’s winning build impressed judges, who called the home a “complex structure executed to a very high standard.”

“This large house has defined wings for guests, family and gatherings each with adjacent outside spaces tailored to sun, privacy and entertainment,” they said.

“There are three separate wings integrated around a central courtyard with three other outdoor living areas. Different building materials and complex junctions have been completed to a high standard.

“The result is a restrained elegance with design surprises and a comfortable ambience.”

Judges called A J Saville Builder’s renovation an immaculate transformation set in a stunning Queenstown landscape, surrounded by mountains and English oak trees.

“This home was beautifully built and very much in character of Queenstown with impressive stonework, metal roofing, cedar weatherboards and plaster.

“The main hub of the home contained the living, kitchen and dining area looking out to both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. The home is built to suit activities of a busy skiing family, with places to remove and dry out ski boots before heading out to evening parties.

“This renovation was almost a re-build from the ground up. It boasts fantastic flow to the outdoor area, with an outdoor fireplace for the family to enjoy the last of the sunlight. The builder should be praised for capturing the views and connection to the Queenstown landscape.”

The results were revealed at a gala dinner on Saturday 11 July at the Ascot Park Hotel. The winning builders were recognised by members of the Southern Registered Master Builders Association and members of the local building industry.

There were 21 Gold Award winners from the Southern region which will now be eligible alongside Gold Award winners from up and down the country to become the National Gold Reserve finalists, which will be announced in September.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for Renovation of the Year and House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.

The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, James Hardie, GIB, Nulook, SafetyMate, Carters, ITM, Plumbing World, Resene, Westpac and Mitre 10.
