Working towards solutions for transport in Queenstown Lakes

Shaping our Future working towards solutions for transport in the Queenstown Lakes District

The big issues facing the Queenstown Lakes District around transport are being looked at by community think-tank Shaping Our Future.

Following well-attended public forums in both Queenstown and Wanaka in May, two separate task forces, made up of local volunteers, are currently being formed to create a long-term vision for the future of transport in the district.

The task forces will consider land, air and water transport modes and members – many of whom have significant industry experience – will put together recommendations around strategic planning and implementation for the desired outcomes for transport in the district. Aspects up for consideration include public transport, creative and practical visioning, local culture and attitudes and infrastructure placement.

Task forces in Queenstown and Wanaka will spend the next few months working through the May forum information, consulting with experts and creating a vision for the future, with reports and recommendations to be presented back to the community forum for agreement.

Shaping our Future chairman David Kennedy says: “Transport is a hot topic at present. The Shaping our Future process looks long-term at creating a vision and strategic direction for the next 30-plus years. We can’t fix the immediate problems but we can look to the future and try to prevent similar situations occurring for future generations.

“We have a strong group of individuals representing a cross-section of the community on the task force. They are all committed to the Queenstown Lakes District and passionate about making a valuable contribution to the long-term future of transport in the area,” Kennedy adds.
