Tanks dry? Make sure you buy water from a registered supplier

With the dry weather likely to continue, people who rely on rain for household water supply may consider purchasing water to top up their tanks.

The Drinking Water team at the NMDHB Public Health office are reminding people to buy water only from a registered supplier.

Sonya Briggs, Manager Environmental Health & Communicable Diseases at the NMDHB, says that anyone who is carrying drinking water for more than five days in a year is required by law to be registered by the Ministry of Health.

“Drinking water suppliers must follow Ministry of Health guidelines to ensure that the water is safe and meets New Zealand’s drinking water standards,” Ms Briggs says.

“Although the Public Health office hasn’t had to issue any health warnings associated with contaminated water or water-borne diseases this summer, we urge consumers to be vigilant and ask a supplier to show a current registration certificate.”

A valid water carrier registration lasts for one year and will include: date of issue; registration number and be signed by an accredited Drinking Water Assessor.

If you have any questions about water carriers (including registered ones in Nelson Marlborough) please contact the NMDHB Drinking Water team at the Public Health office:
