Scout Barbour-Evans To Run for Dunedin Mayoralty
Scout Barbour-Evans Announces Candidacy for Dunedin Mayoralty
In a statement released on Facebook today, Scout Barbour-Evans has announced their candidacy for the position of Mayor of Dunedin. This is further to their announcement in October 2015 that they will be running for a city councillor position.
The statement read as follows:
“Tēnā koutou, my name is Scout Barbour-Evans and I am thrilled to announce that I am running not only for city councillor in this year's local body elections, but for Mayor as well!
For those of you who don't know me so well - I'm a Dunedin student passionate looking after our planet and our people. I care very deeply about equality, human rights, sustainability, accessible healthcare and education, and animal rights.
Dunedin is a unique place to live because our population is transient. Throughout 9 months of the year, a quarter of our little city's population are students at the University of Otago or at Otago Polytechnic.
I grew up in this sweet little city, and I'm always so excited to be able to share it with others, especially the new scarfies who get into town twice a year. But as I'm getting older, it's more and more apparent to me that we need to work harder at looking after our little city, and make sure that at the same time we're looking after our future too.
We cannot underestimate the power our little city has in deciding our futures. We cannot understate the importance of local government in protecting those futures. As students in 2016, with a climate crisis, a housing crisis and another potential economic crisis looming, it's our time NOW to make the right choices and futureproof our home.
Are you with me?”
